The Dangers of "Tech Neck" - What You Need To Know

What Is Tech Neck?

'Tech neck' also sometimes called "text neck" is a condition that has become increasingly common with the widespread use of technology. It is used to describe the pain and discomfort experienced in the neck and upper back due to excess time spent looking down at devices. With smartphone and laptop use skyrocketing, our necks are being forced to do the heavy lifting.

The condition is not always painful, but over time can lead to increased stiffness, loss of movement, and pain, but can also lead to longer-term health consequences if left untreated. In this article, we will explore the dangers of tech neck and what you can do to prevent it.

27 KG Of Force On Your Neck?

First, it is important to understand the mechanics behind 'tech neck'. When you look down at a device such as a smartphone, your neck is put in an unnatural and position. Your head weighs around 5 kg, which when put on a 40-60 degree angle (such as looking down at your phone) can produce up to 27 kg of force upon your neck! This can result in pain, stiffness, and discomfort in these areas, as well as headaches and even over time permanent structural changes.

What Are The Dangers of Tech Neck?

One of the biggest dangers of tech neck is that it can lead to long-term spinal problems. When the neck is held in an unnatural position for long periods, the spine is forced out of alignment. Over time, this can lead to chronic pain and even spinal degeneration, which can cause a range of other health problems.1

One of the biggest concerns for me as a Chiropractor is the effects this has on a young developing spine and nervous system when kids and teens are spending so many hours on their phones and other devices all day. As the twig is bent, so grows the tree, so it's really important that we make sure our kids are using their devises properly.

In addition to the physical dangers, those with severe neck pain can see their mental health deteriorate. Those with 'tech neck' can feel frustrated and overwhelmed, leading to stress, anxiety, and depression. This, in turn, can even further negatively impact overall well-being and quality of life.2

Prevention is the Best Cure

To prevent tech neck, taking regular breaks from looking down at electronic devices and maintaining good posture when using them is important. This may mean holding the device at eye level or taking regular breaks to stretch and move around. Exercises that strengthen the neck and upper back muscles can also help prevent tech neck.3 Have a look at the Instagram Reel below we made a little while ago that shows a really simple way to hold your phone to help protect your spine.

Whilst using your computer, you can place your laptop on a laptop stand and get a wireless keyboard to prevent you from looking down.
